Local area description
The Klaserie Private Nature Reserves is one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in South Africa, covering some 60,000-hectares and is part of the greater Kruger National Park. With the Klaserie river bisecting the reserve on its path to Olifants and Mocambique, this reserve has it all, from the wonderful bird life, to the spectacular fauna and flora, the Klaserie has something for everyone. This unfenced, untamed wilderness is where you will find Makumu, an oasis of luxury surrounded by the harshness, unpredictability and unspoiled appeal of the African bushveld.
The Klaserie River is the true lifeblood of the reserve, supplying countless numbers of game with life sustaining water, especially in the drier winter months when the summer rain-filled hollows, depressions and natural pans have all dried up. With it’s origins south of the reserve the Klaserie river winds and meanders its way through the Klaserie en route to its ultimate destination, the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mocambique. A real sight to behold is the large dust clouds that precede the large buffalo and elephant herds moving into the river system on a daily basis.
